The Carter’s 10 Cs of supplier evaluation method gets its name from Ray Carter, director of DPSS Consultants. He had originally described the 7 Cs of effective supplier evaluation in a 1995 article in ‘Purchasing and Supply Management‘. That number has become 10 since then. They offer a clear focus for anyone involved with selecting or evaluating suppliers.
Question and evaluate the suppliers on the basis of 10 Cs:
🔍 Competency: Does the supplier have the knowledge, expertise, and technology to deliver the required product/service?
🔍 Capacity: Does the supplier have the production capacity and resources to meet your demand on time and in full?
🔍 Commitment: Does the supplier demonstrate a strong commitment to your business and a willingness to build a long-term relationship?
🔍 Control: Does the supplier have strong internal controls to ensure quality, compliance, and risk management?
🔍 Cash: Is the supplier financially stable and able to meet its payment obligations?
🔍 Cost: Is the supplier’s price competitive and sustainable for your budget?
🔍 Consistency: Can the supplier deliver consistent quality and performance over time?
🔍 Culture: Does the supplier’s culture align with your company’s values and working style?
🔍 Clean: Does the supplier have a good track record on environmental and social responsibility?
🔍 Communication: Does the supplier maintain open and clear communication channels with you?
If you systematically evaluate each potential supplier against these 10 criteria, you can make a well-informed decision about who to partner with.
