Kolkata: The Kolkata Police have implemented extensive security measures for the “Nabanno Abhijan” protest march, expecting potential violence during today’s demonstration. Nabanno, the state secretariat of West Bengal, houses the offices of the Chief Minister and other top officials.
The protest, organized by an unregistered group claiming to represent students, aims to demand justice for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
According to the police, evidence has surfaced indicating a conspiracy to incite unrest and anarchy in West Bengal by exploiting the genuine anger of concerned citizens.
The state police assert they have credible information that one of the organizers of the “Nabanna Abhijan” met with the leader of a political party at a prominent five-star hotel. They also claim to have specific intelligence of a conspiracy aimed at creating widespread chaos and anarchy, with the intent of provoking the police into using force.
To maintain law and order, over 6,000 police officers will be deployed, with 19 strategic points identified for barricading, according to a senior official who spoke to NDTV. Approximately 26 Deputy Commissioners of Police will be stationed at various locations.
Barricading efforts will begin at 8 a.m., with significant police presence at key locations such as Hastings, Furlong Gate, Strand Road, and Howrah, Kolkata’s twin city.
The Trinamool Congress has criticized the BJP over the call for the “Nabanna Abhijan,” while the BJP has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of relying on the police as her last line of defense under pressure.
In response to the protests, the police have arranged special measures to ensure students appearing for the UGC NET exams can reach their examination centers without disruption.
The police have pointed out the irony of an organization claiming to represent students planning a disruption on a day when thousands of students are taking exams at various centers across the city.
The brutal rape and murder have ignited protests within the medical community nationwide. In West Bengal, thousands of doctors have been on strike since the August 9 incident, steadfastly refusing to return to work despite appeals from the Supreme Court and the state government.
The police’s response followed reports that the ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj’ planned to hold a rally at Nabanna, the state secretariat, demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
ABOUT THE KOLKATA RAPE-MURDER CASE
On August 9, the semi-naked body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim, a postgraduate second-year student, was confirmed to have been raped and murdered, according to an autopsy.
Sanjoy Roy, a civil volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested the following day in connection with the crime and is currently in judicial custody. The CBI, which is investigating the case, conducted a polygraph test on Roy this past Sunday.
The incident has sparked widespread protests in Kolkata and across the country, with demonstrators demanding justice for the victim and action against those responsible. Protesters, including nurses and resident doctors, are calling for stricter laws to address crimes of rape and murder. (With inputs from PTI)
